Mount Alexander Shire Council is encouraging residents to make new connections in their community, or reconnect with their existing neighbours, as part of Neighbour Day on Sunday 28 March.

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community that encourages people to connect with those that are nearby.

“This year’s celebration has never been so important given the isolation and challenges our community has endured as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Melissa Fowler, Community Activation and Social Isolation (CASI) Community Connector, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“Whether it’s sharing a cup of tea with a neighbour, spending time walking and catching up together, or holding a barbecue in your street, your Neighbour Day can be as big or small as you’d like.”

Council and the Mount Alexander CASI Local Support Network have some easy and free ideas for residents and community groups to participate in Neighbour Day:

Get creative and tell us your neighbourly story

How has a neighbour helped you? Is there a place in your neighbourhood that fosters social connection? If so, we’d love to hear about it!

Share what being a good neighbour means, or provide an example of how a neighbour has helped you and go into the draw to win a local hamper, valued at $100*.

The winner of the ‘Neighbourly Stories’ competition will be drawn at random at the Castlemaine Community Lunch on Tuesday 30 March and notified via email.

Competition terms and conditions, and the winners name will be published on our website, www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/CASI.

Grab a Share a Cuppa pack and catch up with a neighbour

Share a Cuppa packs are free and aim to help residents build and foster social connections in their community.

The packs include teabags, recipes, seeds and a range of printed resources.

Share a Cuppa packs are available from local businesses and community information hubs like the Civic Centre, Castlemaine Library, Castlemaine Community House, Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, Newstead Rural and Regional Transaction Centre, general stores and the Campbells Creek Post Office.

Invite your neighbour to a community lunch

Community lunches are held in Maldon and Castlemaine weekly during the school term, and are a great way to catch up with neighbours in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and enjoy a healthy and affordable two course meal.

Maldon and Castlemaine Community Lunch are offering a 2-for-1 deal to encourage people to share lunch with a neighbour.

The 2-for-1 lunch deal is valid on the following days only:

- Wednesday 24 March, Maldon Community Centre, 6 Francis Street, Maldon. Bookings not required.
- Tuesday 30 March, St Mary’s Hall, Castlemaine. To book contact Castlemaine Community House on 5472 4842 or visit www.bit.ly/2ZXrAmP

Invite your neighbour for a walk

Celebrate Neighbour Day by inviting someone in your neighbourhood, town or community on a walk.

Regular physical exercise is beneficial not only to our physical health, but mental health too.

Join one of the following community walking groups in Maldon:

- Movers and Shakers – Friday 26 March, 2.00pm to 5.00pm
- Gardeners and Gatherers – Friday 30 April, 2.00pm to 5.00pm

To book, or for more information contact Maldon Neighbourhood Centre on 5475 2093 or email info@maldonnc.org.au.

“Neighbour Day is a fantastic way to familiarise yourself with who’s-who in your community,” said Ms Fowler.

“When you connect with the people who live nearby, you’re showing you care about what happens locally and are supporting safe, friendly and resilient streets and towns.”
