Walks, tracks and trails

Mount Alexander Shire has a vast number of active tracks and trails. On land owned and managed by various authorities such as; Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning (DELWP), Crown and Council.
Some of the major tracks and trails include the Goldfields Track, Mt Alexander Mountain Bike loop and Castlemaine to Maldon trail. Walking and Cycling Trails in the Mount Alexander Shire are considered closed on days of Total Fire Ban.

Castlemaine Maldon Trail

The Castlemaine to Maldon Trail allows walkers and cyclists to enjoy stunning natural surroundings as they travel alongside the historic Victorian Goldfields Railway.

The 17.7 km walking and cycling trail links the shire's largest towns of Castlemaine and Maldon, and connects to the Campbells Creek Walking and Cycling Track.

Look out for the steam train as you walk, run or ride the trail alongside the historic goldfields railway.

Walking in Castlemaine

Castlemaine has two accessible walking maps available to download. This includes the Castlemaine CBD and the wider Castlemaine township.

Walking and cycling strategy 2010-2020

Council’s 2010-2020 Walking and Cycling Strategy sets out a strategic approach to increase and improve walking and cycling activities in the Mount Alexander Shire. Walking and Cycling Advisory Committee was established to support the implementation of the Strategy and to continue engagement with the community.
