Mount Alexander Planning Scheme

The Mount Alexander Planning Scheme applies to all public and private land in the Mount Alexander Shire and is a legal document prepared by Council and approved by the Minister for Planning. Planning controls differ across Mount Alexander, so it's important to find out which controls affect your property.

Council uses the planning policies and guidelines set out in the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme to make decisions about Planning permit applications.

The planning controls set out in the Scheme determine whether a planning permit is needed for a particular use or development of land.

From time to time, changes are made to a planning scheme, these are called planning scheme amendments. Amendments may be introduced to respond to changes in the area, a new Council policy, or to improve how the scheme operates.

If you would like to know more about the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme and how it affects your property, contact Council or a planning professional to get advice before making changes to your property.

You can find out more about planning schemes at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Planning Policy Framework (PPF) translation - Amendment C95malx

Amendment C95malx translated the Local Planning Policy Framework of the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme to incorporate the policies into the Planning Policy Framework (PPF). Amendment C95malx came into operation on 20 May 2021 when the notice was published in the Government Gazette. Now that the translation is complete, the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme is structured with the PPF (including state, regional and local) entirely integrated at Clauses 10-19. The state, regional and local policies will now be listed together, below their relevant themes.

Corrections Amendment (Amendment C97)

Council is preparing a planning scheme amendment to correct errors and anomalies within the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme which are associated with both the mapping (zoning and overlay) and ordinance of the Planning Scheme. The amendment seeks to ensure that the Planning Scheme is accurate and up-to-date, that the mapping reflects the existing use and conditions of the land, and makes sure that where specific protection or requirements are necessary, this is done accurately through the use of overlays. The correction of these anomalies and minor errors will also contribute to the more effective operation and administration of the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme.
