Next election

Local government elections are held every four years. The next election will be held on Saturday 26 October 2024.

The elections are managed by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC), with all voting done by post.

Leading up to the October elections, we will be regularly updating this web page. 

Put your hand up to become a Councillor in 2024

Becoming a Councillor is a great opportunity to represent your community and to help make decisions for the benefit of all residents and ratepayers.

So we can better serve our community we encourage people from a variety of backgrounds to put up their hand up and help make a difference.

Candidate information sessions

One-on-one information sessions between potential candidates and Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Darren Fuzzard, and/or Mayor Matthew Driscoll, and/or Deputy Mayor Rosie Annear are available[AM1] .

They are an opportunity for potential candidates to ask questions and have an informal discussion to understand the role properly and find out more about Council.

In partnership with Victorian councils, the MAV is delivering a number of information sessions for prospective candidates. These sessions can be attended in-person or online.

Do you have to vote? 

Voting is compulsory.

In Victoria, if you are enrolled to vote, you must vote in all Federal, State and council elections. If you do not vote, you may get a fine.

How to enrol and vote

You must be enrolled to vote if:

  • you are an Australian citizen, or eligible British subject
  • aged 18 years and over
  • have lived at your address for at least one month.

If you are 16 or 17 you can enrol now so when you turn 18 you'll be able to vote.

If you are an Australian citizen who lives in Victoria you can check your enrolment details online at Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) website at any time.

You can enrol to vote online, by visiting a post office or by mail or email.

Online: visit the Australia Electoral Commission website.

Post office: forms are also available from your local post office.

By mail or email: An Occupier ratepayer application form can be filled out for those who wish to apply to be a council-enrolled voter. See mail and email details on the form.

How to vote

Mount Alexander Shire Council elections are conducted by postal voting by the VEC. All voting information can be found on the VEC website.

A new ward structure for our shire

Mount Alexander Shire’s ward structure is changing. Instead of there being five wards and seven councillors, in the October 2024 election, Mount Alexander Shire will be divided into eight wards and there will be one councillor in each ward.
