Applying for a building permit

Building permits are issued by a registered surveyor. They show that your proposed building works meet relevant standards. These include health, safety and structural soundness.

How to apply for a building permit – a step-by-step guide

You will need a registered private building surveyor to issue the permit for you.

How to apply

Step 1.Check if a building permit is needed

Some types of building works may not require a building permit. To seek advice on whether a building permit is needed visit our Do I need a building permit page.

Step 2.Find a building surveyor

Chat to friends for a referral or use the internet to find a registered private building surveyor in your local area. If you have contracted a builder they may also be able to refer a suitable surveyor to you.

If you are conducting works that risk damage to Council assets including roads, footpaths, kerbs and channels, drainage pits or nature strip, you may need an Asset Protection Permit.

Step 3.Prepare your documents

Speak to your building surveyor to find out what documents are required to lodge your application. This includes documents required to comply with the Building Regulations 2018. See the Consumer Affairs Victoria plans and permits checklist to guide what you’ll need.

Step 4.Submit your application

Lodge your application with Council’s municipal building surveyor or your chosen building surveyor and pay any required fees.

Step 5.Receive the building permit

Your building surveyor will check for compliance with the Building Act and regulations. If it complies, they will issue your building permit. A copy of the building permit must be sent to the owner, the applicant, and the nominated builder. Do not start work until you have a copy of the building permit in your possession.

Note: If you are conducting works that risk damage to Council assets including roads, footpaths, kerbs and channels, drainage pits or nature strips you may need an Asset Protection Permit.

To discuss your proposal further contact Council’s Building Department on 5471 1700 or email building@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.
