Keeping multiple animals

In Mount Alexander Shire we want to make sure that pets and animals are cared for and have enough room in the homes they live in. This is why we keep track of the number of pets you have. 

What are the maximum number of animals I can have without a permit?

You will need an excess animal permit if you have more than the number of animals in this table. See below for permit application details.

You do not need an excess animal permit for fish.

  • Flat or units – No animals permitted, except 1 dog, 2 cats and 2 rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs or mice
  • 20 acres and above - 5* dogs and 5 cats are permitted. Controls may apply for all other animals

* The number does not apply to working dogs.

The number of animals is not limited by local law, however, planning scheme controls may apply.

Step 1.Before you apply

Make sure that you have registered all cats and dogs included in your application before applying. 

Step 2.Complete your application 

Download and complete the Keeping excess animals permit application form(PDF, 153KB)

Step 3.Submit your application

Please email the completed application form to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Step 4.What happens next?

When we have received your application, we will contact you to advise you how to pay.

If all requirements are met your permit will be mailed to you at your nominated mailing address within 14 days.

Visit our Customer Service Counter to submit your application and make payment:

Step 4.What happens next?

We will assess you application and if all requirements are met your permit will be mailed to you at your nominated mailing address within 14 days.
