When disaster hits, most men go straight into fix-it mode—protecting family, helping neighbours, getting on with what needs doing. But even the strongest blokes feel the impact.
And taking some time to check in is one of the strongest things you can do.
Women are also welcome – come along one and all.
Dr Rob Gordon is a psychologist who has worked with communities and individuals after bushfires for 40 years. He has met with individuals and communities at all stages of the recovery process and has traced its stresses and what people can do to deal with them. He has found as recovery goes on, people often find it hard to make good decisions, plan ahead and solve problems. This can result in their recovery process not being as effective as it could. He will share what he has learned about recovery and tell some stories about what other people have learned the hard way in the hope this experience helps those going through it today.
Susie is an environmental psychologist and therapist, with many years of experience working on disasters, climate change and other community threats. Since the 2009 Black Saturday fires, she has been developing online and print resources, training programs and workshops on these topics.
