Camp Reserve to Campbells Creek Accessible Off-Road Trail and Path

View of accessible path along Campbells Creek

Mount Alexander Shire Council has completed a major upgrade to its walking and cycling network, delivering a fully accessible off‑road trail linking Camp Reserve in Castlemaine with the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve. This project supports Council’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, encouraging active transport, and strengthening recreational connections across the shire.

Funding for the project was provided through the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program (Round 2), administered by the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions. The program aims to stimulate local economic activity through investment in community sport and active recreation infrastructure.

The project was delivered in two stages:

Stage 1 - Campbells Creek-Fryers Road Path (Completed 2022)

Stage 1 delivered 615 metres of new accessible footpath along Campbells Creek–Fryers Road, including drainage and associated works. This section now provides a safer, more reliable connection between the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve and the Midland Highway.

Stage 2 – Campbells Creek Walking and Cycling Trail (Completed May 2025)

Stage 2 completes the final link between Princess Street, Campbells Creek and the existing trail into Castlemaine. Works included 596 metres of new off‑road trail featuring a gravel path, two new pedestrian bridges over Campbells Creek, and short sections of boardwalk to improve accessibility and environmental protection.

As part of this stage, new First Nations interpretive signage was designed and installed by DJAARA. These signs share important cultural knowledge, capturing the past history of the area and highlighting Dja Dja Wurrung connections to Country, including the land, waterways, and the local flora and fauna.

Construction for Stage 2 commenced in mid‑November 2024, delivered by AMH Civil, and was successfully completed at the end of May 2025.

With both stages now finished, the community can enjoy a continuous, accessible walking and cycling route between Castlemaine and Campbells Creek—enhancing recreation opportunities, supporting active travel, and contributing to a healthier, more connected shire.

New track, new name - A name for Campbells Creek trail

Council is progressing the formal naming of the 4.3‑kilometre off‑road trail between Campbells Creek Park and Camp Reserve as Watjarang Baring, meaning platypus track in Dja Dja Wurrung (DJAARA) language. The name reflects the cultural significance of the area and supports Council’s commitment to recognising Traditional Owners and incorporating First Nations language into public spaces.

Developed in line with the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria (2022), the proposal has received in‑principle support from DJAARA and Geographic Names Victoria, with strong community support during consultation in early 2024.

Since its completion in 2025, the trail has become a key recreational and active transport corridor. Naming it Watjarang Baring aligns with Council’s Reconciliation priorities and increases the visibility of Traditional Owner language across the municipality.

Subject to Council endorsement in Mid 2026 and final approval from Geographic Names Victoria, the name Watjarang Baring will formally recognise the cultural heritage of the Dja Dja Wurrung people and their enduring connection to Country.
