Mount Alexander Shire Council has identified the Diamond Gully growth area in McKenzie Hill as a key location for Castlemaine’s future residential expansion.To support this planned greenfield development and ensure essential infrastructure is in place, Council is undertaking an upgrade of Diamond Gully Road.

The project covers approximately 372 metres of roadway between the existing sealed sections at Lushington Rise and Gurri Drive. The upgrade will deliver a safer, more consistent road environment and improved access for current and future residents.

Construction considerations

The upgrade works along Diamond Gully Road involve several important construction activities and temporary changes that road users and nearby residents should be aware of.

Road closure during construction — Diamond Gully Road will be closed to through‑traffic for the duration of works to ensure safety for workers and the community.
Maintaining property access — Council will work directly with adjacent landowners to manage access needs and minimise disruption wherever possible.
Mixed existing road conditions — The current combination of sealed and unsealed surfaces, along with narrow sections, requires careful reconstruction to achieve a consistent and safe road corridor.
Installation of new infrastructure — Works include kerb and channel, underground stormwater drainage, and a shared path with barrier fencing and handrailing, all of which require staged construction and temporary site controls.
Construction footprint — Activities will occur along the 372‑metre section between Lushington Rise and Gurri Drive, with machinery, materials, and traffic management in place throughout the project.
Environmental protection measures — Designated no‑go zones will be established to protect sensitive vegetation and habitat areas, and vegetation removal will be strictly limited to what is essential for construction.

Where are we now?

Council has awarded the construction contract to Leech Earthmoving Pty Ltd. Detailed design has been completed, and preparations are underway ahead of construction.

The project area covers the section of Diamond Gully Road between Lushington Rise and Gurri Drive, as shown in the locality plan and design drawings.

Construction completion date

Construction is scheduled to commence in early October 2026, with all works expected to be completed in early 2027. This timeline allows for the delivery of road upgrades, drainage improvements, and shared path infrastructure within the Diamond Gully Road project area.
