Fogartys Gap Road Upgrade - Stage 1
- Project typeRoad safety improvements
- Project scheduleCompleted
- Completion Date30 April 2024
Mount Alexander Shire Council completed upgrade works in April 2024 on a 2.24km section of Fogartys Gap Road in Ravenswood South, between Woodbrook Road and Leversha Road.
Fogartys Gap Road is a key rural link between Maldon and the Calder Highway, used daily by commuters travelling between Maldon, Castlemaine and destinations further along the highway.
It is also a well‑used route for local cyclists, making safety improvements particularly important. This section of road had long been identified as high‑risk due to narrow lane widths, high travel speeds, unsealed shoulders, limited sight distance over crests and inadequate signage. The project was delivered with support from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.
The works addressed several key safety issues, including:
- reconstruction and widening of the existing road
- provision of 1.5m sealed shoulders
- improved delineation, guideposts and cyclist/advisory speed signage
- extension of culverts and installation of trafficable end walls
- enhanced erosion control measures
Completion of the project has significantly improved the condition and safety of this section of Fogartys Gap Road, reducing crash risk and providing a more reliable route for residents, commuters, freight operators and cyclists. The upgraded road now offers safer passing opportunities, better visibility and more forgiving roadside conditions.
