Footpath Design Program 2022-2023
Mount Alexander Shire Council has completed the 2022–2023 Footpath Design Project, delivering detailed designs for three priority footpaths identified through community feedback and strategic planning. These designs support Council’s long‑term commitment to improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and connectivity across the shire. The project provides shovel‑ready designs that will guide future construction programs and strengthen links between residential areas, schools, community facilities and town centres.
The footpaths designed through this project include:
- Berkeley Street, Castlemaine – between Kennedy Street and Barker Street
- Franklin Street, Guildford – northern side between the Midland Highway (Fletcher Street) and Turner Street
- Doveton Street, Castlemaine – northern side between Kennedy Street and Hargraves Street
These locations were selected to improve safe pedestrian access to key destinations such as Castlemaine Kindergarten, Castlemaine Railway Station and Guildford Primary School, while also enhancing connections to the Castlemaine and Guildford town centres.
The designs aim to support active transport, particularly for students and young families, by creating continuous, accessible routes that integrate with the existing footpath network. As part of the design process, Council also assessed potential crossing points on main roads, documenting these for consideration in future footpath planning and construction works.
The final design review has now been completed, and the three footpaths will be included as potential construction projects for consideration in upcoming Council budgets. These designs will help guide future investment in pedestrian infrastructure and support Council’s ongoing efforts to create safer, more connected and more accessible communities across the shire.
