Section of unmade footpath for future design consideration

Mount Alexander Shire Council recognises the vital role that pedestrian infrastructure plays in promoting active lifestyles, improving public health outcomes, and ensuring safe, accessible movement for all residents and visitors. As part of its ongoing commitment to expand active transport connectivity and safety, the Council has prioritised the design of new footpaths throughout the municipality.

Council has identified five footpath projects to design in 2025-26 financial year. Below are the list of the footpaths which are included in the scope of works.

  • Gaffney Street, Castlemaine (between Domain Dr and Brown Street)
  • Blanket Gully Road, Campbells Creek (between Campbells Creek-Fryers Rd and Eleanor Dr) – Shared Path
  • Maclise Street, Castlemaine (between Johnstone Street and railway crossing)
  • Walker Street and Cornish Street, Castlemaine (between Doran Ave and Cornish Street)
  • Duke Street, Castlemaine

Design considerations

The proposed footpaths have been developed in line with the Council Plan and customer requests received from the community. The design approach also aligns with Council’s Active Transport Strategy, supporting safer and more connected walking routes throughout the Shire. A key focus is improving links between growth areas and major destinations.

Project outcomes

The project aims to strengthen pedestrian connectivity between important activity centres and community destinations. This includes linking the town surrounds with:

  • Castlemaine town centre
  • Dhelkaya Health / medical centre
  • Key walking and cycling routes such as the 10‑Foot Bridge trail
  • Retail destinations including Woolworths
  • Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve
  • Campbells Creek Primary School
  • Residential areas

These connections will support safer, more accessible movement for residents and visitors.

Where are we now?

Mount Alexander Shire Council has engaged Beveridge Williams Pty Ltd to undertake the design works for the proposed footpaths. Preliminary designs have now been completed, following existing desire lines and proposed locations identified through community feedback and planning.

What happens next?

An arboricultural assessment will be undertaken to understand any impacts on existing trees before finalising the detailed design.

Future construction will be dependent on funding availability, and at this stage there is no set timeframe for when construction will commence.
