Mount Alexander Shire Council completed the construction of a new footpath along the north side of Berkeley Street, between Kennedy Street and Barker Street in Castlemaine, in May 2025. Delivered as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility across the shire, the project strengthens pedestrian links between Castlemaine Kindergarten, Castlemaine North Primary School, the town centre and the Castlemaine Railway Station.
The works included installing a 1.5‑metre‑wide concrete footpath, upgrading public lighting, adding new car wheel stoppers and improving line marking within the Castlemaine Kindergarten carpark. The completed footpath now provides a safer and more accessible route for children walking or cycling to school, while also supporting Berkeley Street residents—including older community members—to travel safely on foot or with mobility devices.
This project was jointly funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Mount Alexander Shire Council.
