Burgoyne Street Bridge

Council is planning to remove the existing Burgoyne Street timber bridge and replace it with a new dual‑lane bridge that meets today’s safety and access standards. The current bridge has aged significantly, and a Level 2 Bridge Condition Assessment found that many of its timber elements now require upgrading or replacement.

Because of its condition, the bridge’s load limit has been reduced from 20 tonnes to 5 tonnes to ensure the safety of all road users. This restriction will remain in place until the new bridge is built, after which the load‑limit will be removed.

The upgraded dual‑lane bridge will provide safer, more reliable access for residents, emergency services, school buses, and service vehicles, and will better support the long‑term transport needs of the Vaughan community

Where are we now?

Council has informed residents of Vaughan, Irishtown and Fryerstown about the reduced 5‑tonne load limit, along with other groups affected by the change, including school bus operators, waste collection services and emergency services. Detour and load‑limit signage has been installed to ensure road users are aware of the restrictions.

Design work for the new dual‑lane bridge has been completed, and both the Flora and Fauna Assessment and the Heritage Impact Assessment have also been finalised. Council has submitted a planning permit application for the construction of the new bridge following the removal of the existing timber structure.

What happens next?

Council is actively exploring various funding options to support the construction of the new bridge over Fryers Creek in Vaughan.

The overall timeline for completing the new bridge will depend on when funding becomes available, but Council will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.
