Mount Alexander Shire Council is committed to upgrading, maintaining and rehabilitating local infrastructure in an efficient and timely manner.
Following the significant rainfall and flash‑flooding events of 2022, several areas across the shire were identified as requiring improved stormwater management. One of these priority locations is the Farnsworth Street and Forest Street catchment in Castlemaine.
The existing drainage system in this area includes both piped stormwater infrastructure and an overland flow path that carries water toward View Street and Forest Street. During heavy rainfall, the current underground network becomes overwhelmed, contributing to localised flooding.
This project aims to upgrade the underground stormwater connection along sections of Farnsworth Street, View Street and Forest Street to improve drainage capacity, reduce flooding risk and enhance the resilience of the local road network. Detailed drainage and kerb designs have been completed to guide construction.
The project is located at the intersection of Farnsworth Street and Forest Street in Castlemaine, extending along parts of:
This area forms a key stormwater catchment where underground drainage transitions to an overland flow path. Improving this connection will help reduce flooding impacts on nearby roads, properties and public spaces.
The area of work is shown in the image below.
The drainage upgrade at the intersection of Farnsworth Street and Forest Street has been designed to address the specific hydraulic, environmental and physical constraints of this catchment. Key design considerations include:
These design considerations ensure the upgraded drainage system will perform reliably during major rainfall events, reduce localised flooding and improve the resilience of the surrounding road network.
The project has progressed through several key stages:
Once construction begins, the contractor will establish the site, implement traffic management, notify nearby residents and commence staged excavation and installation works.
The exact dates will depend on contractor scheduling, weather conditions and permit approvals, but the project is expected to be delivered within the next financial year, subject to budget funding.
