Project summary
It includes low water-use landscaping, up-lighting of significant heritage buildings and an increased canopy cover through new street tree plantings.
Other features include new seating, wayfinding signage and an acknowledgement of local First Nations history.
Project objectives
The design aims to deliver a range of benefits, including a reduced heat island effect, enhanced safety and connectivity, and support for the local economy through an inviting and attractive town centre.
It also provides recommendations for improvements that ensure the history of Castlemaine is respected, there is consistency in the look and feel of the streetscape, and improved access, connectivity and amenity.
Development of the landscape design was guided by the Castlemaine Streetscape Plan and Design Standards which provide direction on the long-term vision for the town centre. These design standards were informed by extensive community feedback, undertaken in 2019.
The Barker Street and Forest Street Landscape Design will be considered for adoption by Council at the July 2025 Council meeting.
