Following community consultation, Mount Alexander Shire Council has developed a suite of streetscape improvement works for the townships of:

  •  Metcalfe
  • Sutton Grange
  • Fryerstown
  • Baringhup

These works aim to improve safety, accessibility and amenity in key community locations, strengthening pedestrian connections and enhancing the usability of important public spaces. The improvements reflect Council’s commitment to supporting small towns through practical, community‑driven upgrades that improve everyday liveability.

Scope considerations

The streetscape improvement package includes a range of township‑specific works, such as:

  • construction of new and upgraded footpaths
  • improved pedestrian connectivity to community facilities
  • installation of accessible parking
  • fencing and safety treatments along road reserves
  • restoration of heritage features
  • installation of new community infrastructure such as bus shelters
  • future works for Baringhup to be confirmed

Each township’s scope was shaped by community feedback and site assessments to address local priorities.

Community consultation

Community consultation for this project was undertaken through multiple channels to ensure broad participation and meaningful local input. Engagement included:

  • an online consultation process via SHAPE.mountalexander in September 2024
  • an in‑person community consultation session
  • direct engagement with residents and stakeholders through emails, letters and phone calls

Feedback gathered through these processes directly informed the design and prioritisation of works in each township, ensuring the improvements reflect local needs and support safe, accessible and welcoming community spaces.

Where are we now?

Sutton Grange

Streetscape improvements in Sutton Grange focus on the Sutton Grange Hall, which is the heart of the community. The hall hosts weddings, parties, funerals, community meetings and serves as the school pick‑up point — making safe, accessible access essential.

Planned and progressing works include:

  • a new footpath around the hall connecting existing entrances
  • new sealed accessible parking bay
  • a footpath connection to the site of the future proposed playground
  • fencing along the road reserve to improve safety and guide pedestrian movement

These upgrades will significantly improve access for families, school pick‑up traffic, community groups and event attendees.

Metcalfe

In Metcalfe, works focus on improving pedestrian safety and preserving local heritage. Planned works include:

  • pathway improvements near Metcalfe Hall
  • restoration of the historic stone wall outside the former Metcalfe Shire Hall

These improvements will enhance access to key community buildings while protecting important heritage features.

Fryerstown

Fryerstown’s improvements respond to community requests for safer school transport facilities. Planned works include:

  • installation of a new bus shelter to support school pick‑up and drop‑off

This will provide a safer, more comfortable waiting area for children and families, particularly during winter and wet weather.

Baringhup

Works for Baringhup are to be advised, with further planning to determine the most appropriate improvements for the township.
