Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling on businesses to share how they’re taking climate action in the workplace.

Local business owners are being encouraged to share their climate change-making story by uploading a short description and photograph of their efforts at www.shape.mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Whether it’s embracing renewable energy, saving waste from going to landfill, using environmentally friendly products and materials, or developing ‘green’ policies, Council wants to hear from you.

“We want to share the great work and proactive steps our local business community is taking to champion climate action and sustainability”, said Brendan Garrett, Council’s Climate Change Coordinator.

Council will collect all stories, and for the month of June share them across local print, radio and social media.

“We’re looking for projects – big or small – that promote sustainability and action on climate change”, said Brendan.

“Some examples of initiatives could include those that support renewable energy, use resources responsibly, support local food production, reduce the use of plastic, and much more.

“By sharing your successes, you’ll inspire others and encourage them potentially to try something new.”

Every business owner that submits a story of how they’re taking climate action goes into the draw to win a $200 gift voucher from a local nursery.

The winning entry will be drawn at random on Friday 27 June at Council’s upcoming Micro and Small Business Event in Castlemaine.

“More and more people are making ethical and sustainable choices when shopping”, said Brendan.

“Local businesses that value climate action and sustainability and put that out there, have the potential to increase their customer base and draw more like-minded people to them and their product or services.”

People in the business community can share their climate change-making story in the workplace at www.shape.mountalexander.vic.gov.au by 31 May 2025.

“In 2024, we invited community members to share their story of tackling climate change, and received a fantastic response”, said Brendan.

“This year we’re focusing on celebrating the good work in our business community by focusing on their sustainable actions. Stay tuned for next year’s theme for 2026!”, he said.

This initiative aligns with a number of Council strategies, including the Climate Change Strategy and the Economic Development Strategy.
