Commonwealth Home Support Program extended to 2029

Mount Alexander Shire Council has welcomed the Australian Government's decision to extend the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) for a further two years while reforms to Australia's aged care system continue.

The extension provides certainty for older Australians who rely on entry-level support services to help them remain safe, independent and connected to their communities.

Manager Community Wellbeing Rosalie Rogers said the decision acknowledges the vital role CHSP plays in supporting older people to live at home for longer.

"CHSP is a valued program and an important entry point to Australia's aged care system. The two-year extension provides welcome certainty for both older Australians and service providers," Ms Rogers said.

While welcoming the announcement, Ms Rogers said further work is needed to ensure aged care services can meet demand.

"There is still significant work ahead to ensure the system can respond to the needs of an ageing population. Long waitlists exist across all services and ongoing collaboration with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing will be essential to improve access and ensure people receive support when they need it," she said.

The Commonwealth Home Support Program provides practical assistance for older people who need low-level support to continue living at home. Support at Home and Home Care Packages are designed for people with higher or more complex care needs.

"For many older Australians, CHSP is their first experience of the aged care system. As care needs change over time, Support at Home packages will continue to offer a broader range of services for those requiring more intensive support," Ms Rogers said.
