Cool space available during extreme heat

Following the recent fire event in the shire, Mount Alexander Shire Council is providing additional support for community members seeking relief from the extreme heat forecast in the coming days.
Castlemaine Town Hall will operate as a community cool space on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday from 11.00am – 5.00pm.
The space will offer air conditioning, drinking water and accessible toilets. Council is unable to provide food, entertainment or transport. The facility is intended solely as a safe, cool environment for anyone needing heat relief.
On Monday, 26 January, the Town Hall will be open for the Australia Day – Survival Day event.
The Maldon Neighbourhood Centre will also be open from 12.00pm – 6.00pm from Saturday to Monday as a refuge from the heat.
In addition, Mount Alexander Shire pools will be open and free to enter on Monday, 26 January, providing another option for residents to stay cool.
Community members can also access the Castlemaine Library as a cool, public space.
The library is open from 9.30am – 2.00pm on Saturday and 10.00am – 5.30pm on Tuesday. Regular opening hours apply for the remainder of the week.
Lisa Knight, Council’s Director, Healthy Communities, encourages everyone to take precautions during the heat, stay hydrated and look out for vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.
“After what our community has been through in recent weeks, we know that many people are feeling tired, unsettled and in need of extra support.
“Please take advantage of the community cool space in the Town Hall if you are in need.”
