Council seeks community feedback on Newstead outdoor fitness equipment
Published on 20 November 2025
Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting the Newstead community to share their thoughts on a proposed outdoor fitness space at Lyons Park.
As a thank you, everyone who provides feedback will go in the draw to win a family membership to the Newstead Pool for the 2025-26 season.
Newstead was identified as a priority location for the installation of outdoor fitness equipment due to strong community interest and limited existing fitness facilities. Lyons Park has been recommended as the preferred site based on its accessibility, available space and supporting amenities.
To enable this project to go ahead, Council is in the process of seeking additional funding from the State Government. The proposed installation would include fitness equipment, connecting paths and a drinking fountain.
Karen Evennett, Council’s Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, said the project is about creating inclusive spaces that encourage healthy lifestyles.
“We know that access to free, outdoor fitness equipment can make a big difference for people who want to stay active without the cost of a gym membership,” Ms Evennett said.
“Lyons Park is a well-used, central community space, and adding fitness equipment will complement the existing amenities and provide more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to exercise outdoors.
“Community feedback is essential to make sure the design works for everyone.”
Council is inviting feedback on:
- the types of exercise equipment you’d like to see
- how you plan to use the space – time of day, duration, and whether lighting or other features would help
- any barriers or enablers to using the equipment (e.g. paths, parking, transport).
Your input will help shape the design and ensure the space meets community needs.
This project follows the successful installation of fitness equipment at the Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve in Castlemaine, which has been well-received by the community.
Council plans to roll out more fitness equipment in other townships, subject to funding.
