Mount Alexander Shire Council has elected Councillor Toby Heydon as Mayor for a one-year term, with Cr Matthew Driscoll elected as Deputy Mayor.
Cr Heydon, who represents the Forest Creek Ward, said being elected Mayor is an extraordinary honour.
“This is really the greatest honour of my life. To be elected Mayor of the towns and the countryside that I love so much is really humbling and moving and it's so great to be in a team of fellow Councillors who are all so passionate,” Cr Heydon said.
He said he wants to build on the momentum of the past year and work on important priorities including housing, sustainable development as well as business and economic growth.
“I really look forward to a renewed focus on the natural world and protecting our unique environment here.”
Cr Heydon was elected to Council in 2024 and has been serving as Deputy Mayor for the last 12 months under outgoing Mayor, Cr Rosie Annear.
Cr Matthew Driscoll, who represents the Loddon River Ward, was elected Deputy Mayor. Cr Driscoll previously served as Deputy Mayor in 2022/2023 and Mayor in 2023/2024.
Cr Driscoll brings more than 35 years of experience in financial services and capital markets, with a strong focus on affordable housing and sustainable development.
Cr Annear thanked her fellow Councillors for their partnership during her term, noting they achieved much together, including creating the Council Plan and the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, two key documents that will guide Council’s work over the next four years.
“Each of us brings our own experiences, our own values, our own insights, our own thoughts. That's the way it should be. We don't always agree on things, but gosh, it would be boring if we did,” Cr Annear said.
“Thank you for allowing me to be Mayor for the previous year. It's been challenging and it's been beautiful.”
Mount Alexander Shire Council is comprised of eight Councillors elected by residents and ratepayers from eight wards.
