Dry weather causing limitations for unsealed roads grading

Road grading

Prolonged dry weather and reduced access to water has made unsealed roads grading significantly more challenging across Mount Alexander Shire in 2025.

Recovery from dry summer conditions that contribute to gravel road deterioration usually begin annually in March/April. This is because moisture becomes naturally prevalent in the road surface material.

This year the extended dry period has not yet presented an opportunity to enter this recovery phase and is limiting what can be achieved while these conditions continue.

Council is working to improve road conditions as quickly as possible and additional resources have been engaged to help accelerate maintenance efforts across Council’s unsealed road network.

Council’s grading program will become more effective and response times will gradually reduce when weather conditions are more favourable.

Despite the current limitations presented, Council still intends to achieve the planned works program for the year.

Residents are still encouraged to report any specific road concerns by lodging an online service request at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Council/Report-an-issue or contacting Council on 5471 1700.

Council encourages community members to exercise caution both on the roads and near work crews.
