Help shape the future of waste and recycling in Mount Alexander Shire
Published on 15 May 2025
Mount Alexander Shire Council is seeking a small and diverse group of community members interested in waste management in the shire to join a new Community Waste Reference Group (CWRG).
The CWRG will play an important role in providing input and advice on future plans to better manage waste and recycling in our shire.
“There are several significant changes to how waste materials will be collected from households,” said Michael Annear, Council’s Director Infrastructure and Development.
“These include new State Government policies on separating Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) and glass from recyclables, along with increasing community expectations to reduce waste and improve environmental outcomes.”
The CWRG will assist Council in facilitating meaningful conversations with the wider community around topics that include:
- waste management
- waste reduction and recycling opportunities
- the separation of glass and FOGO
- the development of a master plan for an upgrade to the Castlemaine transfer station.
Membership of the new CWRG is intended to represent a broad cross-section of the community, with varying skills, knowledge and backgrounds.
The group will comprise of up to eight community members and at least one Councillor, in addition to Council officers.
“We’re seeking a mix of passionate individuals, from those with deep interest in waste and recycling, to those new to the topic who can offer a broader community perspective,” said Karen Davies, Council’s Acting Manager Operations.
Membership of the CWRG will be for at least one year with meetings held twice a year at the Ray Bradford Meeting Room in Castlemaine.
Expressions of interest are open until 5.00pm on Monday 23 June 2025.
