Mount Alexander Shire Council is pleased to announce the milestone purchase of land on High Street, Maldon, marking the first project of the emerging Mount Alexander Affordable Housing Trust (MAAHT).

The land purchase is the crucial first step in delivering two modular homes for workers in Maldon – made possible through a generous $650,000 BIG Project grant from Community Bank Maldon & District, alongside a $400,000 contribution from Council.

The new homes will be managed by Haven Home Safe, a professional community housing provider, ensuring fair and expert tenancy management for future residents.

Council expects tenants will be living on site in 2027, following completion of phase one of the project.

Mount Alexander Shire Mayor, Toby Heydon, said the announcement represents an important step forward in addressing the significant shortage of local affordable housing for workers.

“It's no secret that we're short of affordable housing for workers in the shire.

Nurses, teachers, police officers, first responders, childcare workers, aged care workers, disability support workers – so many people travel long distances just to come to work here,” Cr Heydon said.

“This is such an important milestone for Council and for Community Bank Maldon and District. The long-term outcomes are profound.”

Community Bank Maldon & District Chair Matthew Gordon said the project reflects the bank’s commitment to a wellbeing‑focused local economy.

“We’re proud to partner with the Mount Alexander Affordable Housing Trust,” Mr Gordon said.

“If we want a wellbeing economy – one that supports happy, healthy communities and social justice – projects like this are essential. This grant will have a positive impact for years to come and is something our community can be proud of.”

Council extends a BIG thank you to Community Bank Maldon & District for its leadership and support and to the members of Tarrangower Tomorrow for their advocacy around affordable housing in Maldon.

The project demonstrates exactly what the Mount Alexander Affordable Housing Trust is committed to achieving: more affordable, appropriate and secure rental housing for the community.
