Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling for local artists to express their interest in exhibiting their work as part of the 2025-2026 Phee Broadway Theatre Foyer Exhibition Program.

The Phee Broadway Theatre is located on Mechanics Lane in Castlemaine, and is a community gathering place where creativity is fostered, people connect and shared narratives are explored.

The program will run from July 2025 through to June 2026, exhibiting the work of local artists, group shows and community organisations.

Local artist Vivien Pells exhibited works as part of the Agitation Hill Artists group show in February 2025, and said the process was a positive one.

“I think that it gave all of us confidence creating all the works, framing them and preparing them for hanging and then running an opening in this public venue.

“It has been very worthwhile. I encourage anyone who wishes to become more visible with their art to apply and just go along with the journey and enjoy it.”

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Manager Economy and Culture, Merryn Tinkler, said that Council is proud to support local artists through this program.

“We have a very creative community here in Mount Alexander Shire, and we’re pleased to be able to offer a free space where they can showcase their work in a professional environment.

“The Phee Broadway Theatre shares a foyer with the Castlemaine Library and is a highly-used space, making it a perfect gallery.

“Last year we hosted seven exhibitions from individual artists, group shows and community organisations.

“We had a vibrant range of paintings, mosaics, wire, paper and photography, all of which brightened the space.

“We’re now looking for expressions of interest from all sectors of our artistic community for the coming 12 months.

“We’re looking forward to see what our local artists have in store.”

Expressions of interest close on Friday 30 May, with the first exhibition set to open in July.
