Ray is one of our shire's hard-working School Crossing Supervisors.

We have a number of other roles available, so we spoke to Ray about what he loves about the job.

What drew you to the role?

A friend who had done the job told me about it and said it would suit me. She was right.

What is the best thing about the job?

Best thing about the job is interacting with everybody – the kids, families, teachers. Also, knowing you are doing something important by keeping children safe.

How long have you been a school crossing supervisor?

I'm in my 15th year in the role.

Can you think of a time when you had a funny interaction with the kids?

Funny story: A child of a family I know well was waiting on a cold afternoon for her mum. As we chatted I said she could suggest to her mum they have a Christmas in July. She said: "Yeah, but it would have to snow."

The next afternoon she and her mum were there together and I asked the child: "Did you make the suggestion?." She said: "Oh, no, I forgot!"

When mum heard what we said, the mum said: " Yeah, but it would have to snow!" I pointed out they both said the same thing, we all had a laugh and agreed they must be related, haha!

What would you say to someone thinking about applying for one of the roles?

To a would-be School Crossing Supervisor I would say: Be very alert and careful and always on time. Communicate carefully and clearly to anyone using the crossing and be patient with the traffic.

Blow the whistle loud and clear. Always be friendly. You should really enjoy the job if you like kids and dealing with the general public where you have to.
