Meet the climate change-makers in business
Published on 01 July 2025
This Mount Alexander Shire Council is celebrating how local businesses and community organisations are taking climate action.
The month-long celebration of sustainability and the circular economy will take place on Council’s website, social media channels, and local radio, newspapers and community newsletters.
During the month, Council will share inspiring stories provided by local businesses so we can be motivated and learn from one another.
Council’s Climate Change Coordinator, Brendan Garrett, said that the initiative is a way for the community to connect, swap stories and take action.
“We have a community that’s very passionate about sustainability and climate action here in our shire,” said Mr Garrett.
“Last year we celebrated the good work that the wider community is doing in this space, and this year we’re focusing on local businesses and community organisations.
“Managing a sustainable business can seem daunting but there are lots of ways to contribute to a circular economy.
“For example, Community Bank Maldon & District, The Good Op Shop and Sac'O'Suds Launderette have come together to collect pre-loved coats, jackets and blankets for those in need.
“5 Acre Farm in Taradale is building biodiversity by planting a mixture of natives and non-natives that are suitable for their environment.
“And Muckleford Fields collect used coffee grounds from the Maine Food Store to spread over their blueberry fields.
“We’re so impressed by the sustainability efforts of our community and are excited to share their stories to inspire others.”
The ‘Meet the climate change-makers’ initiative was launched in 2024 and was an action outlined in Council’s Climate Change Strategy.
The strategy sets the direction for Council’s climate action now and into the future and was informed by extensive community feedback.
