Residents may have noticed the installation of new traffic lights on Forest Street, near Castlemaine Primary School.

These lights are part of construction works associated with the new Woolworths development and are expected to be operational from Thursday 5 June.

As a result, the Forest Street school crossing will be removed and the school crossing supervisor will be relocated to another crossing.

Council has worked in partnership with builders Maben and Castlemaine Primary School over several months in preparation for this change, with the support of the school’s Principal.

The new signalised pedestrian crossing on Forest Street will provide a safe and reliable way for students, families, and carers to cross the road to and from school each day.

No school crossing supervisor jobs will be lost as part of this change.

Council acknowledges the valued role school crossing supervisors play in supporting students’ safe travel and thanks them for their ongoing service to the community.

There are currently eight school crossings in the shire, staffed by 11 school crossing supervisors, including a mix of part-time and casual employees.

Council remains committed to advocating for safe, accessible communities and will continue to monitor pedestrian safety in the area.
