Power poles removed as streetscape redevelopment hits milestone
Published on 20 May 2026
Mount Alexander Shire Council is marking a major milestone in the Frederick Street and Mechanics Lane Streetscape Redevelopment, with overhead power poles and wires removed following the completion of underground power works.
The final planned power outage took place on Sunday 17 May 2026, allowing properties in central Castlemaine to be connected to the new underground power network. With the changeover complete, power poles and overhead wires were removed, changing the look and feel of the streetscape.
Significant construction progress has also been made, with crews completing the salvage of heritage kerbs and installing underground drainage.
Works are now continuing on new tree beds, street lighting and supporting infrastructure. A second construction crew has also begun work on site, helping reduce the overall construction timeframe.
This project received $12.19 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP).
