Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling on the community to assist police following theft and vandalism of public art at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

Bronze sculptures depicting leaves and acorns have been stolen from the gardens’ playspace. Nearby, another bronze sculpture, Dusk, by local artist Zoe Amor was deliberately cut at its base, causing significant damage to the artwork which is part of the Castlemaine Art Museum collection and on loan to Council.

Council is working closely with sculptors Nicholas Dunand, Zoe Amor and insurers to assess options for repair and replacement. Council is also reviewing security measures to help prevent further incidents.

Anyone with information about these crimes is urged to contact Senior Constable Daryl Glewis at Castlemaine Police Station on 03 5470 4100.
