Updated Events Grants program to strengthen community connection

Mount Alexander Shire Council has revised its Events Grants program to provide greater support for community activities and ensure funding is directed to initiatives that deliver the greatest benefit across the shire.

The new program will apply from the August 2026 funding round. It introduces multi-year funding for eligible initiatives that demonstrate strong community value and organisational capability, while shifting the assessment focus from attendance numbers to the outcomes delivered for local communities.

Mayor Toby Heydon said the changes recognise the important role celebrations, festivals and gatherings play in building connected communities.

"Events bring people together, strengthen local identity, create volunteering opportunities and celebrate what makes our towns unique," Cr Heydon said.

"The revised program focuses on lasting community benefit and provides greater certainty for established event organisers through new multi-year funding options."

The new assessment framework places greater emphasis on community participation, cultural engagement, inclusion, township activation, accessibility, sustainability and partnerships.

"We know a thriving events culture does much more than attract visitors," Cr Heydon said.

"Great community events support wellbeing, foster pride and connection, strengthen local businesses and create opportunities for creatives and volunteers."

Funding streams include Quick Response Grants for smaller community activities, grants of up to $5,000 for larger events and multi-year support for eligible initiatives.

Applications for the first round under the revised program will open in August 2026. Event organisers are encouraged to review the guidelines and begin preparing their applications. Information sessions and application support will be available.
