Maternal Child Health Centre mural
A mural that reflects playfulness and diversity has been created on the walls of Castlemaine’s Maternal Child Health Centre foyer.
The artwork by local artist Jane Ardley, is part of a broader plan to enhance the centre.
The project
Four talented local artists with relevant skills to create a children’s mural, were approached to respond to an expression of interest and artist brief.
Council selected emerging local artist Jane Ardley to complete the artwork. This is Jane’s first mural commission and Council is pleased to support an emerging artist to develop her career.
The mural will help create a warm and playful atmosphere and explores the theme of welcoming diverse families to the centre.
The artwork brings the space to life by helping to create a warm and fun atmosphere. It uses abstract geometric shapes and bright colours and is the first step as part of a broader plan for further works, including painting the interior and new furniture.
The artist
Jane Ardley is a local Castlemaine based artist who specialises in abstract and contemporary art.
Jane is a multi-disciplinary artist with a background in interior design and sells textile designs. Her unique style incorporates bold geometric shapes, symbolism, spatial design and vibrant colour.
Jane said she was appreciative of the care that the centre had offered her own children.
“I am delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to be involved in such a fantastic project to enhance the space”, said Jane.
Artist statement
I have drawn inspiration from children's toys books, songs, bead mazes, kites and games like peekaboo and hide and seek.
I have included playful, interactive lines to encourage a sense of wonder and exploration.
These varied pathways converge around a central colour spectrum to celebrate and embrace the diverse families within our community.
I have selected warm and vibrant colours to create an atmosphere of comfort and joy, along with some darker tones to create contrast and visual interest. Black and white designs have been included particularly for infants, as they have a limited ability to see the full spectrum of colours.
I have incorporated or enhanced some architectural features into the design to create continuity within the space and to soften the lines of the multiple doors and windows throughout the room.
Here, I am not only celebrating and embracing the diversity of families within our community, I am celebrating the diversity of individuals. As we are all unique.
By celebrating the diversity of the individual, we can create a supportive and inclusive community. A community where children can prosper and thrive, through confidently expressing and embracing their individuality.
