Mural on Panmure Street, Newstead
Mount Alexander Shire Council is commissioning a bold new mural for the refurbished Panmure Street public toilets in Newstead. Artist, designer and researcher Kirsten Moegerlein will respond to the theme ‘Caring for the River’ and work with Newstead Landcare to develop her mural concept.
The project
The mural will create a cultural attraction close to the main trading area of the township and celebrate a local story with visitors and residents.
Community members were invited to have their say about what stories, themes and artists they’d like to see in the project.
There was strong support for concepts connected to the Loddon River, local plants, culturally significant trees and Newstead’s environmental values.
On Dja Dja Wurrung Country, the river has shaped life for thousands of years – from deep Traditional Owner connections to more recent histories of mining and farming.
The selected artist will respond to the theme ‘Caring for the River’ and work with Newstead Landcare to explore stories of recovery and rehabilitation along the riverbanks.
The artist
Kirsten is an emerging artist and experienced designer/illustrator, living in Yapeen outside of Castlemaine. She brings 15 years design experience to her art practice and has a unique abstract style in her art. She delights in light, colour, shape and form, as well as local flora and fauna.

Her passion alongside art is gardening and revegetating the 2 acre block she lives on. Walking along the Loddon River is an ongoing source of inspiration for her art practice.
