Mural on Panmure Street, Newstead

Mural-image.png

Mount Alexander Shire Council is commissioning a bold new mural for the refurbished Panmure Street public toilets in Newstead. We're looking for an artist to create a vibrant wrap‑around artwork that deters graffiti and brings local stories to life.

Artist information session

An artist information session was held on Wednesday 11 March 2026 at the Newstead Arts Hub. This was an in-person session, with an option for online attendance.

Applications are now closed

Mount Alexander Shire Council invited artists to submit their interest in creating a permanent mural installation on a newly refurbished toilet block in Newstead, Victoria.

Applications closed at 9.00am, Monday 16 March 2026 (deadline extended).

The project

The mural will create a cultural attraction close to the main trading area of the township and celebrate a local story with visitors and residents.

Community members were invited to have their say about what stories, themes and artists they’d like to see in the project.

There was strong support for concepts connected to the Loddon River, local plants, culturally significant trees and Newstead’s environmental values.

On Dja Dja Wurrung Country, the river has shaped life for thousands of years – from deep Traditional Owner connections to more recent histories of mining and farming.

The selected artist will respond to the theme ‘Caring for the River’ and work with Newstead Landcare to explore stories of recovery and rehabilitation along the riverbanks.

What the community said about the theme of the mural

Community members were invited to have their say on Shape Mount Alexander, about what stories, themes and artists they’d like to see in the project.
