The Phee Broadway Theatre Foyer exhibition program supports a diverse and rich collection of work from individual artists, group shows and community organisations.
Following a call-out for expressions of interest, ten artists (or groups of artists) were accepted for exhibition dates over the coming year. Exhibitions will run for a five-week period.
Scraps 1 July - 5 August 2026
After the Fire 5 August - 9 September 2026
Organised Amongst Disorganised 9 September - 14 October 2026
Hello Sky 14 October - 18 November 2026
Spring Gully Art 18 November - 23 December 2026
Six Spring Gully Artists - Roberta Ireland, Chris Vigor, Trish Churchill, Elizabeth O’Meara, Val Wellings and Campbell McCullough - each present two works created in the past five years. Using watercolour, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, and collage, they explore local landscapes, overseas impressions and expressive floral themes with diverse creative styles.
Serotiny 23 December 2026 - 27 January 2027
Serotiny is a cohesive collection of paintings and drawings created by the six artists who form the Blue Banded Artists' Group. Created between mid-2024 and May 2026, the landscapes depict Leanganook (Mount Alexander) in its pre-fire state through to the complex landscape of recovery currently visible following the January 2026 Harcourt bushfires.
A Local View 27 January - 3 March 2027
Around 30 photographs will showcase images taken in 2026–27 within the shire by Mt Alexander Photographic Society members. The exhibition may also include contributions from local students, with the aim of promoting the club, encouraging new members and providing a valuable team‑building experience for participants.
Where Sight Ends 3 March - 7 April 2027
Inspired by the space and air of Castlemaine and Central Victoria, these works reflect stillness, light and expansive landscape. Paintings on paper, panels and framed drawings include a joined 100cm diptych with smaller pieces. Watercolour and acrylic trace how paint spreads and settles, mapping space as felt rather than seen.
Outside In 7 April - 12 May 2027
Relief carvings depicting both abstract and natural forms. Botanical shapes such as gum nuts and leaves emerge from solid wooden blocks that hang on the wall, while abstract carvings explore movement and challenge spatial perception, with shapes appearing to recede or disappear into the wall’s surface.
Observations 12 May - 16 June 2027
Approximately 25 works in oil, watercolour, pastel, graphite, pen and ink, photography and hand printing. All subjects focus on observations from nature, landscape, animals, still life, portraiture and life‑drawing. The exhibition showcases the work of a mixed group of enthusiastic artists with varying levels of experience.
Mechanics Lane, Castlemaine (enter via Castlemaine Library)
The proposed artwork must fit within the display areas.
There are three walls available for use in total:
The work is hung on a professional hanging system. The height of the hanging rail allows for single and double hanging.
The Phee Broadway Theatre foyer is not staffed or supervised so all artwork is exhibited at the artist's or organisation's own risk.
Each exhibition is generally allocated four-six weeks, though requests are considered for shorter or longer periods.
Each exhibition should be accompanied by a listing of works or catalogue, and include contact details for the public.
Any sales or enquiries should be made directly with the artist or organisation as Council does not act as an agent.
Should there be any sales of artwork as a result of the exhibition Council will not take any commission.
If you wish to have any associated events to support the exhibition, such as an artist talk or opening, please make this proposal at the point of submitting your expression of interest.
Any associated activities will ideally occur on a Thursday evening before 7.00pm and will be confirmed with the applicant if successful.
Use of the foyer floor space for exhibition launches, artist talks or readings must be booked and confirmed prior to any promotional material being distributed.
