In June 2023 Councillors unanimously voted to change to Local Law 13, which means people are now able to camp, or occupy a caravan or tiny house on wheels, on property where there is an existing dwelling, for an indefinite period of time with no permit required.
This means there is more flexibility for people to stay in different forms of housing for an indefinite period of time.

Maldon and Newstead Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy
Mount Alexander Shire’s population is growing and a strategic approach towards housing is needed. We need to make sure that any new housing meets the need of our current and future populations, has a diversity of options to match our demographics, and is being provided in the right locations.
We must also consider heritage values, neighbourhood character and environmental features (including the natural environment and biodiversity as well as environmental risks such as bushfire).
All of this and more will be considered as we develop a housing strategy for Maldon and Newstead.
