Snakes
Common local snake species include the Eastern Brown Snake, Red-bellied Black Snake and Tiger Snake, all of which are venomous.
While snakes can be alarming to encounter, bites are rare, and snakes will usually avoid humans if left undisturbed.
If you see a snake
- Stay calm, do not approach or attempt to handle it.
- Give it space – most snakes will move on if not threatened.
- Keep pets and children away, and monitor the snake from a safe distance.
If the snake is in an unsafe location, contact a licensed snake catcher.
In the rare event of a snake bite
- Call 000 immediately.
- Keep the person still and calm.
- Apply a pressure bandage starting at the bite site and wrap upward.
- Immobilise the limb and wait for medical assistance.
Manage snakes on your property
- Keep grass in commonly used areas close to your house and garden trimmed to increase visibility.
- Maintain clear pathways around buildings and sheds.
- Control rodents, which can attract snakes.
Remember, snakes are protected native wildlife. Coexisting safely means understanding their role and respecting their space.
