We’re developing a Biodiversity Strategy

About the Biodiversity Strategy

Mount Alexander Shire Council is developing a Biodiversity Strategy to guide how biodiversity is governed, protected and enhanced across Council‑managed land.

The strategy will be informed by the best available science and relevant policy. It will identify clear, practical priorities to support and strengthen biodiversity across the shire.

What the strategy will focus on

The Biodiversity Strategy will focus on Council‑managed land and activities, while recognising that strong biodiversity outcomes are best achieved through a coordinated, landscape‑scale approach. Council will work with partners to support positive environmental outcomes beyond land it directly manages.

The strategy will:

  • Identify priority actions based on evidence, potential impact and feasibility
  • Consider available resources, organisational capacity and delivery pathways
  • Complement existing Council strategies and plans
  • Deliver a practical, implementable action plan with clear priorities, responsibilities and pathways for delivery

Working on Country

This work takes place on Country that has been cared for by Traditional Owners for millennia. Council is committed to working in partnership with Traditional Owners to respect and support ongoing custodianship and to align with aspirations to heal Country.

A shared effort

Protecting and enhancing biodiversity is a shared responsibility. Council, Traditional Owners, government agencies, landholders and the broader community all have an important role to play.

Council recognises the strong interest, knowledge and experience in biodiversity held across the community and will seek to draw on this to inform and strengthen the strategy.

Community engagement

Community engagement will play a key role in shaping the Biodiversity Strategy. Engagement will help identify local knowledge, priorities, opportunities and partnerships, and will inform how actions are applied and delivered.

Biodiversity Strategy workshop

Council is holding a public Biodiversity Strategy workshop, open to all residents, on Friday 22 May from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to:

  • Meet others who are passionate about protecting and enhancing biodiversity across the Shire
  • Learn more about the purpose and scope of the Biodiversity Strategy
  • Share local knowledge, ideas and perspectives

Before attending, participants are encouraged to consider:

  • Which biodiversity values matter most to you in the Shire
  • The biggest current and emerging threats to biodiversity
  • How the community can be involved in protecting and enhancing biodiversity
  • What success could look like in 10 - 20 years
  • Whether you have collected local environmental data that could help inform Council’s analysis

This workshop marks the start of Council’s engagement process. There will be further opportunities to be involved as the strategy develops, including more detailed engagement activities.

Next steps

Feedback and insights gathered through engagement will help shape the draft Biodiversity Strategy. Once developed, the draft strategy will be released for public consultation before being finalised by Council.

Updates about engagement opportunities and the progress of the Biodiversity Strategy will be shared on this page.
