Newly newly constructed section of Hargraves Street footpath

Mount Alexander Shire Council completed construction of a new footpath along the western side of Hargraves Street, between Campbell Street and Berkeley Street in Castlemaine, in May 2026. Delivered as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility and supporting active transport across the shire, the project enhances pedestrian connections between nearby neighbourhoods, local schools and the Castlemaine town centre.

The works replaced the existing gravel path with a 2‑metre‑wide asphalt footpath, providing a smoother, more durable and more reliable surface for everyday walking, cycling and mobility‑device use. This upgrade strengthens links into central Castlemaine and supports safer, more comfortable travel for residents of all ages.

As part of the project, the crossing points at the Hargraves Street and Berkeley Street intersection were upgraded through the installation of Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs), improving accessibility and supporting safer navigation for people with low vision.
