Training for local CFA groups, a Parkinson’s Disease support group and a walking tour of remarkable people at Castlemaine Cemetery are some of the local projects funded through the latest round of Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Community Grants program.

Council has awarded grants to 16 community groups who will share in almost $50,000 to deliver projects that foster connection and community across the shire.

One of the community projects that this round of funding will support is the Maldon Petanque Club, who are doing a membership drive to expand their community engagement and broaden the club’s reach.

Another group to receive funding is Motivational Running Training – from couch to 5km! A group for community members to get fit and connect over the cooler months. The final goal is to run the Run the Maine 5km together at the end of September and celebrate their accomplishment.

Some of the other groups include:

  • Connecting Country (Mount Alexander Region) Inc., who will be working with the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club to update and reprint the Reptiles and Mammals of Central Victoria and Woodland Birds of Central Victoria booklet
  • Castlemaine Rocky Riders Mountain Bike Club Inc., who will be expanding their club’s membership and improving its governance policy and practices
  • ARCANE inc: Autistic-led Regional Culture Arts Neurodiversity Education and Employment, who will be working the with the local Autistic community to collectively write and illustrate a book that will celebrate neurodiversity.

The Community Grants have been awarded to a mixture of not-for-profit organisations, local clubs and community groups.

Together they present a diverse range of projects and opportunities that focus on sport and recreation, environmental initiatives, social inclusion and projects that support local tourism – all of which will benefit residents across the shire.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Matthew Driscoll, said that Council is proud to be able to support local community groups with their projects and activities.

“We have a very community-oriented shire and it’s fantastic to see so many community groups working to foster connection,” said Mayor Driscoll.

“These grants go a long way to helping new groups get up and running, and longstanding groups continue to support our community.

“Congratulations to all the groups who received funding. I’m looking forward to seeing these amazing projects and activities come to life this year.”

Council offers two rounds of Community Grants every year. The next round of grants opens on Monday 15 July 2024.
