Mount Alexander Shire Council has welcomed a fresh, graffiti-inspired mural at Mechanics Lane in Castlemaine.

The mural was created by local artist Joe Pratt, who led a team of young artists – Tai Ly, Kody Angel-Brace and Asher Crosby-Loder – to paint the mural.

Joe's work ranges from traditional greyscale sketches to vibrant digital drawings.

Residents may have seen the playful cartoon scene he created, that was installed as a vinyl wrap on one of the shire's waste collection trucks. It features a young adventurer soaring through the air on a recycling bin.

The Mechanics Lane mural design was inspired by the space: A place where the community comes together to support local musicians and artists, and join in on workshops and events.

Council’s Manager Economy and Culture, Merryn Tinkler, said that Council is proud to support local artists with opportunities to learn and create.

“The new mural at Mechanics Lane is a fantastic way to bring the space to life during winter and celebrate the music, art and community events that happen over summer,” said Ms Tinkler.

“It’s also a great way for three young artists to be mentored by a talented and experienced artist, gaining new skills and confidence in their artistic practice.

Castlemaine Graffiti Busters, a local group of volunteers dedicated to removing graffiti and beautifying our town, love the new mural and are supportive of this public art project. They’re keen for more outlets for young people to express themselves creatively on designated surfaces.

“We’re pleased that the new mural is already well-loved by local groups and may lead to more creative projects in the future,” said Ms Tinkler.

“I encourage everyone to visit Mechanics Lane and enjoy the new artwork.”

The mural is temporary and will be updated by a local artist every 12 months.
