Community invited to help shape Council’s Biodiversity Strategy
Published on 12 May 2026
Mount Alexander Shire Council is developing a new Biodiversity Strategy to guide how nature is protected, enhanced and supported across Council‑managed land, and the community is invited to have their say.
Biodiversity includes the plants, animals and natural systems that support healthy landscapes and a thriving community. Community input will help shape practical actions and priorities for caring for nature now and into the future.
Mount Alexander Shire Mayor Cr Toby Heydon said the strategy will be shaped by both science and local knowledge.
“Our community has a strong connection to the natural environment and a deep understanding of what makes it special,” Cr Heydon said.
“This strategy is about working together to protect biodiversity and make sure our actions are practical, achievable and guided by what matters most locally."
The strategy will focus on Council‑managed land and activities, while recognising that the best biodiversity outcomes are achieved through partnerships with Traditional Owners, other land managers, landholders, community groups and other organisations.
This work is happening on Country that has been cared for by Traditional Owners for thousands of years. Council is committed to working in partnership with Traditional Owners to respect and support ongoing custodianship and to align with aspirations to heal Country.
