Mount Alexander Shire businesses and community groups are encouraged to apply for the 2026 Local Impact Business Grants, with applications closing on Sunday 18 January.

The new grant program offers up to $5,000 for small, practical projects that help build a ‘wellbeing economy’ – an economy that works for people, unique places and the environment.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is looking for initiatives that go beyond business-as-usual to create lasting benefits for the shire. Successful projects will address at least one of five key areas: Community Wealth Building, Inclusion and Equity, Health and Wellbeing, Environment and Country, or Place and Infrastructure.

"We are looking for projects that leave a legacy," said Daniel Bone, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator.

"The best applications won't just solve a one-off problem, they will leave behind new skills, stronger partnerships, or better ways of working that continue to benefit our community long after the grant is spent."

What makes a successful application? This is a competitive program where applications are scored on project benefit, strategic alignment, and the ability to deliver. To be highly competitive, applicants should demonstrate:

  • Collaboration: Projects involving multiple businesses or formal networks (like trader groups or farmer networks) are a priority and naturally score higher for shared benefit.
  • Legacy and ‘Ongoing Value’: Council is looking for ‘knowledge assets’ or tools – such as a recorded workshop or a guide – that provide value long after the initial funding is used.
  • Ready to go: With a delivery window ending 10 June 2026, the strongest applications will have clear project plans and realistic budgets.

What kind of projects are likely to be funded? Examples of highly competitive projects include:

  • Professional Skills Masterclasses: Host a series of expert-led workshops on specialised topics like ‘Circular Economy Transition’ or ‘Inclusive Hiring’" and record them to create a permanent resource library.
  • Regional Gastronomy Trail: A group of small farm-gate producers and food makers creates a professional physical map and signage to guide locals and visitors through the shire’s local food and drink experiences.
  • Inclusive Access: A disability group working with a cluster of shops to audit and improve accessibility or staff training, making our retail strips more welcoming for everyone.
  • Regenerative Agriculture Field Days: A network of small-scale farmers hosts ‘'on-farm’ demonstration days focused on regenerative soil health, creating a best-practice guide for the shire.

"These are just a handful of ideas to get you thinking – Council welcomes any innovative, business-led project that supports our people, place or planet," said Mr. Bone.

"This is about businesses and the community working together to make the shire a better place. If you have an idea that helps our local economy become more resilient, fair, or sustainable, we want to hear from you."

Key details:

  • Grant amount: Up to $5,000 (ex GST).
  • Applications close: Midnight, Sunday 18 January 2026.
  • Project window: Activities must be delivered between 6 February and 10 June 2026.
