Each year, Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Local Laws officers return dozens of lost pets directly to their owners – from adventurous Alfies and Frankies to curious Figs and Merlins.

“If your cat or dog goes missing or wanders away from home, you have a much better chance of them being returned if they are registered,” said Ron Medler, Council’s Coordinator Community Safety & Amenity.

“Keeping your pet’s registration up to date is an easy way to look after both your animal and the wider community.

“Pet registration is a simple step that can make a big difference. It helps our Local Laws officers respond quickly when reuniting pets with their owners – whether that’s a wandering Tilly or a bold Barney – and it supports services that keep our shared spaces clean and safe.”

Pet registration is a requirement under the Victorian Government’s Domestic Animals Act, which requires pet owners to register their cats and dogs with their local Council.

People who have not registered their pets risk receiving a fine, so Council encourages residents to do the right thing and ensure their pets are registered.

Animal registration is due on 10 April each year.

Local Laws officers will be out and about across the shire promoting responsible pet ownership, including keeping dogs on leads and carrying dog poo bags when out in public places.

Ron said that while the serious work of animal safety comes first, he does enjoy seeing all the wild and wonderful names people give their pets when they register them.

“It’s clear how much these pets mean to their families,” he said.

This year’s most popular registered pet names include:

Dogs: Alfie, Angus, Bonnie, Daisy, Frankie, Lola, Ruby, Tilly, Winnie
Cats: Barney, Fig, Kelvin, Lilly, Merlin, Queenie, Teddy
