Mount Alexander Shire is known for its local food and wine, for a vibrant arts community and breathtaking natural surrounds.

Perfectly located in Central Victoria, around 30 minutes from Bendigo by car or rail, and with Melbourne only 90 minutes away, you’ll enjoy a balanced lifestyle with great services, schools and homes in townships like Castlemaine and Maldon.

The role

As part of the Operations unit, Transfer Station Operators are responsible for the day to day operation of the Maldon and Castlemaine transfer stations. Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Provide waste management facility services to the community with the objective of maximising resource recovery and diversion from landfill, ensuring both sites are meeting all safety and environmental standards
  • Effectively resolve customer queries and complaints by providing consistent, accurate and timely advice
  • Promote a positive image of Council to customers by maintaining a friendly and professional atmosphere at all times, making every interaction positive

The roles involve the following:

  • Weekend work and working on public holidays
  • You may be asked (if available) to work in excess of 38 hours/ fortnight, to replace an absent staff member or for seasonal work
  • You will be provided with a uniform, including safety boots that you must wear at all times
  • You will be asked to work outdoors, including during times of inclement weather
  • Due to the nature of services provided and the functions of a waste management facility, the worksite can be dusty, noisy and at subject to odour.
  • Amongst other tasks, you will be asked to pick up litter, operate machinery and serve customers. Workers will not solely perform customer service duties or solely operate machinery
  • The job requires an adequate level of fitness and involves significant time on foot, including walking around a site of 14 hectares.

Our ideal candidate

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant experience and qualifications in customer service and/ or working in the waste management sector or a similar industry
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence
  • A construction induction card
  • First Aid (level 2) certificates would be highly regarded

Applicants with skills and experience in customer service but not in plant or machinery operation should still apply. Equally, applicants that can competently operate plant and machinery (e.g. loader, hook lift truck, excavator, etc.) but have limited customer service experience should still apply. Ideally, Council seeks to employ staff with both sets of skills and experience.
