Mount Alexander Shire Council completed the construction of a new raised wombat crossing on Mostyn Street, Castlemaine, in November 2025, delivering a safer and more accessible pedestrian connection in one of the town’s busiest areas.

The project forms part of Council’s broader commitment to maintaining, renewing, and upgrading local infrastructure to improve accessibility, walkability, and road safety across the shire. The former standard pedestrian crossing has now been transformed into a raised pedestrian crossing — commonly known as a wombat crossing — designed to slow vehicles and give pedestrians a clearer, safer right‑of‑way.

Key improvements

  • Raised asphalt crossing — elevates the crossing point to slow approaching traffic and improve driver awareness.
  • Narrowed traffic lanes — reduces the distance pedestrians need to cross, making the crossing quicker and safer.
  • Upgraded street lighting — provides better illumination of the crossing area, increasing visibility for both drivers and pedestrians, especially at night or in poor weather.

Together, these upgrades create a more predictable, clearly defined, and well‑lit crossing point, significantly improving safety for people walking, wheeling, or using mobility aids.

This infrastructure upgrade was jointly funded by Regional Development Victoria (RDV) and Mount Alexander Shire Council, reflecting a shared commitment to improving transport safety and accessibility for the community.
