Help if your property has been damaged

Emergency Recovery Victoria

Help to clean-up your property is available if you are uninsured or underinsured. Emergency Recovery Victoria will remove eligible damaged homes, businesses, and community assets (eg. town halls and sports facilities) at no cost.

Call the Emergency Recovery Hotline on 1800 560 760 or visit vic.gov.au/register-for-clean-up.

If your home is insured, contact your insurance company even if you don't know the full extent of the damage. Take photos and make a list of everything that is damaged.

Waste Transfer Stations

Until 4pm Tuesday 30 June 2026, residents of the shire who have been bushfire affected can dispose of materials that have been damaged by the fire at our transfer stations free of charge. Proof of residence of Mount Alexander Shire (driver's license or rates notice) is requested.

Council transfer stations are unable to accept commercial quantities of material from fire affected structures. We ask contractors to access an approved landfill for this purpose. For further information, please contact council on 03 5471 1700.

Kerbside waste collection

For residents whose homes need rebuilding or repair before they are habitable, you can choose to pause your waste charge and service. Please phone 03 5471 1700 to request your waste charge and service be paused.

Temporary accommodation for homeowners after a fire

When you've lost your home to bushfire, getting temporary housing in place quickly can be a vital step towards recovery.

Victorian Building and Planning laws include provisions (Clause 52.07) that allow people to set up temporary housing on their land without a planning permit – though there are still some requirements.

Rebuilding your permanent home after a fire

Building and planning regulations will apply when rebuilding your permanent home.

You will need a building and planning permit when your rebuild your permanent home and most permanent structures.
